Tuesday 18th May 2004, 12:00AM BST.
THE Sarnia Walking Club’s first visit to the Hampshire track and field championships in living memory, produced some fine results. Race walkers representing either SWC or GIAAC came home with two golds, a silver and two bronze medals from the 27-strong combined events in Portsmouth.
There was gold for Sarah Mercier in the 2,500m under-15 race, while the talented Stuart Le Noury achieved his in the under-20 event.
It was a good weekend for the Le Noury family, full stop.
Stuart’s brother Jason produced a new personal best for the 3,000 metres track event and won silver in the under-17s and the heat of the day brought the best out of their dad, Kevin, who broke 18 minutes for the first time for years to record 17.48.
His performance was some 40 seconds up on his recent form.
Francoise Lihou (under-17) and Terry Bates both secured bronze medals and the latter’s time of 15-10.6 was an new men’s over-50s island best.
Rob Elliott, who had never previously competed at the county championships in a long and distinguished career, clocked 15-33 in the same 3,000m race and was a new island best for men over-45.
