Another record falls to Geomarine four
Thursday 20th May 2004, 12:00AM BST.
MIXED fours Geomarine have added another record to their already impressive season’s tally. They completed the Guernsey Rowing Club’s Guernsey-to-Herm handicap race in just over 26min.
Although the start in Havelet was very calm, out in the Russel the conditions were not particularly conducive to record-breaking times.
Geomarine completed the course in the quickest time of the day. However, because of their fast times in earlier races, they started well down the field and despite overtaking several other crews, they had to make do with 14th place.
First went to the Project crew of Michelle Moree, who managed to stay ahead of the Ship & Crown who came home a very strong second.
Former captain of the GRC Karl Guille, one of the few still to be rowing a fixed-seat boat, gained a very creditable fifth place.
But the performance of the day certainly came from the novice Grammar School crew who came in sixth and whose time of 31min. 33sec. was a real achievement.
‘We were really pleased with our first competitive outing and can’t wait for Elizabeth College to get on the water,’ said stroke Tristan Lee.
It was also the first race for Alan Machon in his sliding-pairs boat and the first race of this season for the CI Ceramics Crew.
Having been in a class of their own last year, they now have two very good crews against whom to compete. On this occasion, although they beat Stainless Steel Fabrications on time, they were unable to overtake them before the finish.
The next race takes place tomorrow at 6.30pm. It is the longest of the season so far – the 11km around Jethou.
