Guille scores win at Harewood

Friday 21st May 2004, 12:00AM BST.

GUERNSEY’S three representatives at the latest British Hillclimb Championship double-header were all happy with their performances. It was a 600-mile round trip for the trio who drove at the Barbon Manor one-day event and then on to Harewood the following day.

Barbon Manor is the shortest of the championship, with the duration of the run being less than 25 seconds at high speed.

Chris Guille was leading the two-litre sports libre class all day, with a best time of 24.06, but on the last run he was just pushed into second place by Ed Hollier in a 1500cc OMS.

Guille was again sharing the La Villette Garage Mallock with father Geoff whose best time placed him fourth in class.

Mike Dean drove the Gould Ralt up the hill quick enough to qualify for both runoffs and he finished seventh in both to add another eight points to the total for the season.

Across the Pennines at Harewood, Guille got the win he wanted.

But the triumph was not without hiccups as he shattered the first-gear cogs on his second timed run, this despite using the launch control, an addition for this season.

The damage meant he couldn’t take his second class run either, but he managed to secure fourth in class again on his first.

This championship is turning out to be very close with Ed Hollier on 25 and Guille, who combines racing with his studies at Loughborough University, just two back.

He’s improving all the time, said fellow Guernseyman Dean.

‘This year he’s doing all the rounds and is certainly up there with the best.’

Unsurprisingly, Dean qualified both times again and was one of the two drivers who improved in the runoff, finishing fourth for a welcome seven points.

But a disappointing second runoff saw Dean finish only ninth.

All things considered he was fairly satisfied with his efforts and hopes to move up the championship ladder.

‘There’s always room for improvement, but I’d like to think I could finish in the top five,’ he said.

As for his rivals, Adam Fleetwood extended his lead at the top of the championship by breaking both hill records over the weekend.

This means he has now re-written them at every meeting this season.

The next round is at Salisbury (Gurston), the closest for the Guernsey drivers.

For that reason, a bigger Sarnian contingent will be travelling over for the bank holiday weekend.

Dean will once again be aiming for national championship points with Charlie Smith, Andy Bougourd and Mike Endean joining the Guilles in the sports libre division.

Peter Clarke and daughter Tara Harvey will also be competing in the unlimited racing car division.

Dean is especially looking forward to the meeting.

‘Gurston is a power track.

‘Off the start line, my car’s going through the first speed trap at 140mph and the clock hasn’t done seven seconds yet.’
