BEAU SEJOUR Barracudas finished 34 points ahead of their nearest rivals to claim the Bailiff’s Cup at the Deloitte Annual Junior Meet. The event draws together the best swimmers of 11 years and under in the Channel Islands and the Barracudas came out as the top club on 261 points. They also scored a hat-trick of wins in the very lively finale of relays, taking all three of the mixed team events.
‘We are delighted with the progress of the up and coming young ones. There is a lot of strength in depth coming up through the ranks,’ said Barracudas coach Debbie Le Noury.
Defending holders Tigers finished in second place on 227 points, hosts the Guernsey Swimming Club (149) were third and the Jersey SC (40) came fourth.
There was more success for Sarnian swimmers in the individual events.
Joshua Lewis, the 11-year-old Barracuda, shared the best boy award with nine-year-old Luke Winberg of the GSC.
Both won four events in their respective age group but had to settle for silver in one.
For Lewis, it was the backstroke where he was touched out by just 0.3sec. by the GSC’s George Le Page, while Winberg was pipped by a mere 0.04sec. in the breaststroke by Barracuda George Moss.
Lewis and Winberg both set new records in their 100m individual medley events and the older boy added a new best in the 50m freestyle.
Another Barracuda to top the rostrum was 10-year-old Jamie Salmon, who was the only swimmer to register a sub-50sec. time for the 50m breaststroke by clocking 47.46sec.
Tigers, who had the meet’s outstanding female swimmer in unbeaten 10-year-old Charlotte Manning, dominated the girls’ events with a few exceptions for the local teams.
Nine-year-old Ellie Ogier, of GSC, set a new 50m breaststroke record while in the same age group, Barracuda Cody Butcher broke the 100m IM record in the heats by three seconds only to see it broken again in the final by Tigers’ Katie Glendinning.
