Car park arson: £4K reward for conviction
Thursday 27th May 2004, 12:00AM BST.
POLICE yesterday released CCTV footage of a man who was in the Trafalgar Court multi-storey car park at the time of an arson attack. They are urging the man to come forward but also want help to identify him.
A spokesman said that distinctive features of the footage were that the man was tall, had a neck-chain and was wearing a white shirt with ‘O’Neill 52′ on the back.
Police said it appeared one man was responsible.
‘We are treating this as a very serious case of arson and while the exact value of the damage is not confirmed, it is more than at first thought,’ said the spokesman.
‘The damage caused by the fire is of a high-value nature, possibly tens of thousands of pounds.’
Owner LPE Ltd is offering a £4,000 reward for information that leads to the arrest and conviction of those responsible for Sunday’s blaze next to Barings at Admiral Park.
The blaze started after the car park, jointly occupied by Barings and the Close Group, was broken into at about 6pm.
A Kawasaki motorcycle was pushed over, the windscreen of a Peugeot car smashed and the driver’s door of a Mini was broken. A window of the car park was also smashed.
A Volkswagen car was then set alight. The heat from the blaze damaged the lighting and cabling and caused significant smoke damage.
Engineers have been assessing the site and believe that the high heat from the fire may have caused structural damage to the building.
Managing agent Jones and Partners – an associate of ComProp, the site owner – is reviewing security in the area.
The Admiral Park development has been a regular night-time and weekend target for vandals since July.
Panes of glass have been broken at Trafalgar Court, while windows have also been smashed at Sydney Vane House and at Checkers.
Windows of cars parked in the area have also been broken and some damaged by paint.
In October, vandals caused more than £15,000-worth of damage when 30 panes of toughened glass were smashed and walls and cars daubed with graffiti.
