Pairing live up to name

Friday 28th May 2004, 12:00AM BST.

MORE Than A Star and owner-rider Teresa Allez lived up to their name at the fourth dressage weekend staged by the Guernsey Riding and Hunt Club. For the first time they earned a score of more than 70% to win the senior preliminary class comfortably.

To round off a fine weekend, they added a fine score in the British dressage preliminary also to win that class and qualify for the British dressage semi-finals.

Lisa Torode, riding the Alderton family’s horse, Jubilee ‘J’, had another very successful weekend, not only winning the four classes they entered but also gaining the highest score of the weekend, with 73.9% in the senior novice class. When this partnership rides a good test it is stunning to watch.

Katie Wyser and Double Dutch were happily surprised not only to win the senior prelim test but also to gain a score of 71.2%. This was the highest mark they have attained and the horse must have known he was doing well as he was very vocal when performing his movements.

A new member to the club, Annabel Collins, riding Sue Fearis’ mare Mariquitta, won the British dressage novice 32 with a score over 65%, thereby securing her qualifying place.

The last classes of the weekend were dressage to music, which once again attracted many spectators.

Lisa Jane Torode, on her attractive French horse Jouvence du Sire, rode their first music test together, with some beautiful instrumental melodies, winning the novice section.

Kath Marley on her long-term old faithful mare, Sweet Inspiration (Hinny), and Rebecca Keys on her big impressive dun gelding, Shere Khan, contested the elementary freestyle music class, with Marley and Hinny just pipping Keys.

The quality of the competitors impressed visiting UK judge Joy West. She said that the club had some very good dressage horses and she was impressed by the standard being achieved in such a small island.

The next dressage competition to be held on 12 and 13 June will be the last opportunity for members to qualify for the Guernsey Riding and Hunt Club’s dressage championship classes.
