11 sprint records crash

Tuesday 8th June 2004, 12:00AM BST.

SPRINTERS were in their element at the Lloyds TSB 50-metre Sprint Gala hosted by the Guernsey Amateur Swimming Association, with no fewer than 11 records being broken in the Beau Seour pool. Barracudas’ Hannah Lamb and Thomas Hollingsworth each set two new marks with the former knocking nearly two seconds off the 13-year-olds 50m fly record, touching in 32.97 and dipping under the 30sec. barrier in the 50m freestyle in a creditable 29.77.

Her total points tally of 20 also earned her the best girl award in her age group.

Hollingsworth’s records came in the 50m fly in the 16+ age group and the 50m backstroke, where he set a new mark of 28.07.

In both events he just took the touch from GSC’s Ben Lowndes, but it was the latter who took home top male award in the 16+ age group with three second places and a predictable win in the 50m freestyle.

In the same age group Matthew Robert secured the 50m breaststroke title in a new record time of 32.29 in what is his number one event.

Gail Strobridge, also swimming in the 16+ category, secured four wins and took Helen Watts’ record in the 50m backstroke.

In the 14-years section, Jeremy Osborne swept the board in all four events as well as creating a new record in the 50m freestyle of 27.24.

Meanwhile, his Barrac-udas team-mate Robyn Le Friec cruised to victory in the butterfly, setting a new mark of 31.65.

Jo Laine took best girl award in this age group as well as setting a new backstroke time of 34.38.

Matthew Allen, 13, did well to take Thomas Hollingsworth’s record in the 50m freestyle to finish in 28.74, two seconds ahead of his nearest rival.

With a total points tally of 23 he also won best boy award for his category.

The youngest record breaker of the day was 12-year-old Edward Dickinson in the breaststroke, delighted to finish in 41.29 which was a personal best and a great moment for him.

Other youngsters to shine in winning four out of four events were Cody Butcher, nine, Tiffany Gervaise Brazier and George Le Page, both 10, Rosie Le Friec and Matthew Butt 11, and Christine Hume, 15.

The gala ended with a fun canon relay involving 32 swimmers per club.

Barracudas emerged as the victors.
