Revived Old Quarter group has big plans
Thursday 10th June 2004, 12:00AM BST.
CCTV cameras and improved lighting are just two issues being pushed by the revived Old Quarter Association. Its first meeting was attended by more than 50 people, including politicians and representatives from VisitGuernsey and the police. The association is looking at ways of reviving and promoting the area.
‘I have got a committee of more than 10 people all ready to be put in place. All these people are strong in their will and dedicated to the Old Quarter, to see it grow and upgrade,’ said newly-elected chairman Jonathan Jorgenson.
‘As well as having the association for the traders, we’re going to be contacting all the people living in the area and asking their views on what they want to see to improve the area.’
Among those attending the meeting were deputies Leon Gallienne and Brian Gabriel, St Peter Port senior constable Richard Barneby and Ian Shepherd, director of policy and development at VisitGuernsey.
‘I was humbled by the amount of support from the traders and the public,’ said Mr Jorgenson, who after the meeting was approached by Fountain Street and Market Street traders who wanted to come under the wing of the association.
‘The police mentioned that in the near future, closed-circuit television will be provided in the Old Quarter,’ he said, backing the scheme.
The appearance of the area is set to improve under the guidance of the association, which is going to look into the idea of each trader making sure the area outside their shop is clean.
‘I was contacted by a large company on the island which verbally agreed to donate more than £1,000 to upgrade the Old Quarter with troughs and flowers outside the shops.’
Parking permits for traders, clamping down on unauthorised people using Mill Street as a short cut and providing secure containers for rubbish were also brought up at the meeting.
A scheme has been put forward under which coloured zones would restrict when roadworks and scaffolding would be allowed, eliminating them completely from May to August.
The association also favours a bus taking tourists around attractions in Town and then dropping them off at Trinity Square with a guide map to the Old Quarter.
‘I actually got a standing ovation from the panel and everyone that was there,’ said Mr Jorgenson.
‘We started off at 7.30pm and didn’t end until 10.30pm.’
The association will appoint its committee on 1 July. To contact Mr Jorgenson, phone 723381, fax 711911 or e-mail oldquarter@cwgsy.net
