GUERNSEY are, remarkably, through to two British finals at Llandrindod Wells. In mid-Wales yesterday Gary Pitschou stormed into the singles final of the British Isles Champion-ships and Dave Trebert’s quartet made it into the fours final.

Pitschou was in no mood for messing about, dispatching the Welsh champion, Wayne Griffiths, for whom it was virtually a home game, 21-8 to set up a final showdown with Ireland’s Commonwealth Games gold medallist, Martin McHugh.

Meanwhile, 19-year-old Matt Le Ber, his dad Len, Craig Dorey and Trebert overcame David Le Marquand’s Jersey quartet in the semis.

Opening with three singles, Trebert’s team went through a barren mid-game spell lasting nine ends, during which they conceded 14 shots while scoring only four to trail 14-7.

‘That was where we put our Plan B into operation,’ joked GBA chief executive Gary Collins.

‘I went to the bar and treated them to three cans of coke and a Fanta lemonade and their fortunes revived.’

A profitable 2-1-2-2 spell followed, as Guernsey levelled with their Jersey rivals at 14-14 on the 16th end, before the 17th end was tied – because no-one could determine who was shot.

This hiccup meant it was time for Collins to arrange a top-up and Guernsey’s assault duly continued with a 17-16 final scoreline.
