Murder probe – teen girls arrested

Tuesday 29th June 2004, 12:00AM BST.

A MURDER investigation is under way today after Elizabeth Roussel, 41, died in intensive care yesterday.

Mrs Roussel, also known as Lizzie, lived on the Sausmarez Mill Estate, St Martin’s. She was admitted to the Princess Elizabeth Hospital early on Friday morning following an incident in Town involving two young women.

Her condition deteriorated and she died early yesterday morning.

Two local females, aged 16 and 19, were arrested near the scene but were later released without charge.

They were rearrested yesterday after Mrs Roussel’s death and are helping police with their inquiries.

The incident happened around 12.30am near the junction of Church Square and Fountain Street.

‘Clearly we need to speak to anybody and everybody who witnessed any aspect of this incident,’ said a police spokesman.

‘Those witnesses we have spoken to described traffic travelling along Fountain Street as slowing down as a result of what was taking place.’

He said these people were potential witnesses.

‘I would remind readers that this occurred hours after the England-Portugal quarter-final football match.’

Police are also keen to find out more about an incident, which may be connected to the murder, which happened between midnight and 12.30am between Folies nightclub and the Ship and Crown Inn.

‘Two women confronted a third young woman who was walking with her boyfriend.

‘Words were exchanged between two of the women and it is reported that they fell to the ground.

‘We appeal to anybody who witnessed such an incident to come forward.’

Police have opened an incident room and have encouraged people to come forward with any information, no matter how insignificant it may seem.

A Home Office pathologist is travelling to the island to help with the investigation.
