Butcher slices more than seven seconds off record
Wednesday 30th June 2004, 12:00AM BST.
IT WAS left to the youngest and the oldest to set the records in the 200m event of the NRG Series staged by the Beau Sejour Barracudas Swimming Club. In the youngest age group, nine-year-old Cody Butcher smashed the record set back in 1989 by Amanda de Jersey by over seven seconds.
This was one of the oldest records of the series set six years before Butcher was born. In a strong-paced performance, she finished well ahead of the field to record 3-06.22.
At the other end of the scale, Chris Adkins, competing in the under-40 group, recorded 2-13.20 to set a new masters’ record.
Fastest times of the day were recorded by Jonathon Le Noury and Gail Strobridge, who recorded 2-01.06 and 2-13.27 respectively.
There was a close tussle in the 10-year group between Rosie Grimes and Chloe Merrien.
Grimes was the fastest seed and set off at a quick pace, keeping her lead until the final turn. Merrien managed to find the extra required at the finish and took the touch just a tenth of a second ahead to record 3-15.25, a personal best by 27.89 seconds.
The boys’ title in this age group went to David Hall in a time of 2-58.30 while the swimmer to make the most improvement in this event was another 10-year-old, Charlie Spano, who improved by 29.9 seconds.
Adrian Aplin and Tiffany Gervaise-Brazier took the honours in the 11-year group, with Kelsey Russell and Matthew Allen taking the titles in the 12/13 group, all recording lifetime bests.
Lauren Judge and Jeremy Osborne, despite being just outside their best, took the 14/15 titles, recording 2-18.17 and 2-05.21 respectively.
