Lizzie’s death: police say no charges yet
Wednesday 30th June 2004, 12:00AM BST.
POLICE investigating the suspected murder of a 41-year-old mother were tight-lipped this morning about how the inquiry is proceeding. They said that there had been no developments and no one had been charged in connection with the death.
However, a special application was granted in the Magistrate’s Court yesterday to hold two suspects for a further 36 hours.
The women – one a juvenile aged 16 and the other aged 19 – were arrested following an incident in Town in the early hours of Friday morning.
They are being interviewed following what officers said was the homicide of Elizabeth (Lizzie) Roussel, who lived at the Old Mill, St Martin’s.
She was admitted to hospital over the weekend as a result of injuries sustained and died there at about 7.30am on Monday.
Police are still urgently appealing for witnesses to two incidents which they believe are linked to the investigation.
They said the first occurred between midnight and 12.30am between Folies night club and the Ship and Crown pub.
Police said two women confronted a third young woman who was walking with her boyfriend.
Words were exchanged and two of the women fell to the ground.
The second involved two young women and occurred at about 12.30am near the junction with Fountain Street and the top of Church Square, St Peter Port.
Mrs Roussel was admitted to the Princess Elizabeth Hospital and, after her condition deteriorated, died in intensive care on Monday.
Police officers are still encouraging members of the public to come forward with information.
‘We’ve had a reasonable response but we clearly need to speak to anybody and everybody who witnessed any aspect of this incident,’ said Inspector Trevor Coleman.
‘Any bit of information, however insignificant it may seem, is important to our investigations and we would ask anybody who has any to contact us or the Crimestoppers line.’
Police have not responded to requests for information about when they first became aware that Mrs Roussel had been injured and they have given no indication about the nature of those injuries.
It is understood, however, that she had extensive facial and other injuries but officers have not said whether they are looking for a weapon or other forensic evidence.
The manager of Folies confirmed yesterday that he had been approached for CCTV footage from outside the club and this had been handed over.
*Anyone with any information is asked to contact police on 725111 or the confidential Crimestoppers line 0800 555 111.
