Sark anglers land plenty in all-nighter
Wednesday 30th June 2004, 12:00AM BST.
NO FEWER than eight different species were landed in the Sark AC’s latest shore competition. The event was a 14-hour all-night match which attracted 24 members. Fifteen brought fish to the scales, the catch consisting of eight bass, six pollack, nine ballan wrasse, one black bream, two Couch’s sea bream, two conger, one golden-grey mullet and one lesser-spotted dogfish.
Dick Wilson won the competition with seven bass for 14-0-0 and a total of 86 points, a catch that rocketed him to the top of the championship.
The unluckiest angler of the night must be Eddie Glaba.
He caught two conger for a total weight of 43-0-0, but as the club does not weigh in conger but awards a straight five points a fish, his tally for his night’s work was a measly 10 points.
He has one consolation, however: his heaviest weighed 26-0-0 and put him in the lead for the Conger Trophy.
It was interesting to see the capture of the bream. It’s a good sign to see them being caught from the shore so early in the year – it is to be hoped that it is a positive sign for some good bream catches in the autumn.
Like most clubs, the members run a competition kitty at each match for the most species and the heaviest fish. However, the Sark anglers allocate a part to charities and as a result cheques are being sent to both the Royal National Lifeboat Institution and the Channel Islands Air Search.
