Decathlon challenge open to all
Thursday 8th July 2004, 12:00AM BST.
ENTRY forms for the Cable & Wireless Corporate Decathlon are now available and many Bailiwick businesses are expected to take up the challenge. It is a new fund-raising venture by the Guernsey Island Amateur Athletics Club to raise money for the Guernsey athletics team for the Island Games in Shetland next year.
Businesses are invited to enter mixed teams of 10 to take part in the decathlon over the two evenings on Sunday 25 and Monday 26 July. There will be an entry fee and prizes.
Corporate teams have a chance to increase their odds of winning as the GIAAC is offering some of its own star athletes as lots in a silent auction.
Dale Garland, Kimberley Goodall, Lee Merrien, Kylie Robilliard and Ryan de Haaff have already pledged to take part and more are expected to join them.
The GIAAC has added an additional event to the calendar and is offering businesses an extra training session with its coaches at Foote’s Lane on 18 July.
Corporate teams decide for which athlete they want to bid and place silent bids. The business that offers the most money wins the person.
Each corporate team will still need to field a team of 10 but, if it wins the auction, members of the existing team can be replaced with the expert on the night.
* Entry forms are available from GIAAC development officer Terry Bates on 254818 or 07781 127683, at BBC Guernsey in Bulwer Avenue or at the Cable & Wireless Guernsey shops in Smith Street and Centenary House.
