Avery wants to restore the fun

Tuesday 13th July 2004, 12:00AM BST.

JOEL AVERY has promised to put the fun and spirit back into Sylvans’ football. Avery, who as captain lifted the Priaulx League title eight times in nine seasons, said he was excited about the unexpected new challenge replacing Trim Morgan as club coach brings.

He said the job offer came out of the blue.

‘The first I was aware of it [being available] was when I read about Morgan in the paper.

‘I was then approached and asked if I was interested.

‘I feel as I’m passed it now as a player and got a lot out of Sylvans, it is time to put something back in.

‘I’m untried and untested. But I will give it a go and get the team spirit back.

‘It’s a good challenge and I’m up for it.’

Avery, who will have Andy McCarthy as his number two, takes charge of his first training session on Thursday.

‘My main aspect is to get the team morale back and get the fun back into it,’ said the new boss, who has confirmed he will only play in an emergency.

‘I’ll join in training to keep fit, just in case, but I will only play if we were absolutely desperate,’ said the 32-year-old.

He is confident Sylvans have a squad to challenge the best and that includes the Nobes brothers.

‘I’ve spoken to him [John] already and he is certainly part of my plans, as is Paul.

‘They will be treated like everybody else.

‘I’m very happy with what I’ve got.

‘We have got a good bunch of individuals and it is about getting them together as a team.’

On quiet summer on the transfer front Sylvans have been busier than most, attracting new talent.

Matt Le Cras and Carl Wallbridge have returned from North and Matt Drillot has joined from Rovers.

Sylvans open their season away to the champions, St Martin’s, on Saturday 21 August.
