We need money, cameras, action

Saturday 31st July 2004, 12:00AM BST.

THE States has been criticised for not supporting the film industry after it emerged that an a $8m. Hollywood blockbuster about the island will be made elsewhere. Local company Spike Productions said that the island was missing out on opportunities because of a lack of investment.

The film, Romeo and Me, should start filming in the USA next month. It is the story of a young woman from Guernsey who fell in love with a German soldier during the Occupation.

Peter O’Toole is among those lined up to star.

Spike Productions said it was well aware of the lack of support for companies wanting to film in the island.

TV and film is funded in many different ways, including grants from film commissions. The Commerce and Employment Department operates a commission with limited resources and can offer little to producers wanting to film in the island.

‘I think Guernsey could be missing out because every time it gets passed over, an opportunity to promote the island is lost,’ said Spike co-director Warren Mauger.

‘There are so many great locations in Guernsey – you can have some run-down urban site and a beautiful beach within five minutes of each other and you don’t get that in many places.’

Mr Mauger said that his company was keen to work with the States, but attracting film business requires more action.

States film commissioner Tony Brassell said he was well aware of the lack of funds, highlighted by ITV’s Island at War series being filmed in the Isle of Man, where a new industry has emerged to support visiting producers.

‘Like the Isle of Man scenario, the issue with the new film is cash. We don’t have the money to put into these productions,’ said Mr Brassell.

‘Obviously, as a film commission, we would like to see more business here. And if you can get the right type of television that captures the popular imagination, then that will get people wanting to see these places – like the Bergerac effect in Jersey and what New Zealand is now experiencing after Lord of the Rings.’

There are also benefits for a resort in providing for the crew, including accommodation, transport and food.

‘The crew drop a lot of money into the location,’ said Mr Brassell. ‘And the potential for supporting tourism is quite enormous.

‘We can do what we can within the budget. The new department hasn’t had time to consider if it wants to give more support to the film industry, but it would be great to be able to provide some more encouragement and to encourage the television industry here.’

* Romeo and Me will be made by Los Angeles and London-based Aesop Entertainment.
