Co-op tries out DIY scanning

Monday 9th August 2004, 12:00AM BST.

THE Co-op is testing a new self-service checkout till at a Jersey supermarket. If successful, it could be launched in Guernsey later this year.

Shoppers will be able to scan their own goods and then use a touchscreen to pay with cash or cards.

‘This is the first time these machines have been used in Jersey, although they have already proved a great success in the UK,’ said marketing manager Jim Plumley.

‘We will be looking to see what the response is from customers. It will take a couple of months to get the right level and then depending on the outcome, we could extend them to a number of stores, including in Guernsey.’

Shoppers are required to place their basket on a scale, then scan and bag their goods. The machine knows the individual weight of each item and can therefore check that the weight at the beginning and end of the process tallies.

The touchscreen guides shoppers through the process, recording the share number and handling payment.

A slot machine accepts cards as well as cash and will use chip and pin technology in future.

A nearby assistant will accept payment by stamps, cheque or vouchers and will also deal with any queries.

‘We have found that people are shopping more frequently these days, so this self-scan system is designed to make their lives easier,’ said Mr Plumley.

‘Four machines can fit in the space of two conventional checkout counters, so it means that basket shopping is both easier and quicker.’
