Islands on UK’s tourism agenda

Saturday 21st August 2004, 12:00AM BST.

THE Bailiwick is set to benefit from strengthened ties with Britain’s tourism authority. People thinking about visiting Britain are also going to get information about the islands, after VisitGuernsey signed a memorandum of understanding to work in partnership with its counterpart, VisitBritain.

Tom Wright, chief executive of VisitBritain, came to Guernsey to finalise the agreement.

‘Guernsey and its smaller islands are a beautiful part of the British Isles and now overseas customers will be better informed about them,’ he said.

Stuart Pinnell, chief executive of VisitGuernsey, welcomed the agreement as a significant step for the tourist economy.

‘Guernsey can now reach overseas markets. It’s very good news for the Bailiwick,’ he said.

The partnership will also share relevant marketing intelligence, business planning and training. VisitBritain will offer up-to-date information on the islands, in printed material and in overseas offices, and field inquiries.

‘It’s about extending and strengthening our combined efforts overseas, which benefits everyone,’ said Mr Wright.

Mr Pinnell added that further deals were planned. An agreement has been struck in Paris better to promote Guernsey in France. Similar arrangements will be made with Germany and the Netherlands.

VisitBritain is also encouraging Britons to take their holidays in England. The Enjoy England campaign urges people to explore their own country rather than going abroad and Guernsey is now linked with that.

‘It’s achieving results and Guernsey is now part of that programme,’ said Mr Pinnell. ‘The UK is our primary market and, once again, this is all about raising awareness of the Bailiwick among potential visitors.’
