Organisers appeal for local support

Wednesday 25th August 2004, 12:00AM BST.

ORGANISERS are looking for an influx of home-grown entries to boost this year’s church-to-church walk. The 19.4-mile event starts and finishes at South Esplanade and takes in all 10 parish churches.

‘English entries are down at the moment compared with last year,’ said Jayne Le Noury, of the Sarnia Walking Club.

‘We need a good entry from locals wanting to complete our walk of achievement. It’s a good way to spend a Sunday morning.’

The race, on 5 September, takes walkers from the start past Town Church, then up to St Martin’s, where the custom is to touch the Gran’mere de la chimquiere statue at the church gates for good luck.

The route then hits the main road west towards the airport, skirting Forest Church on the way, before heading to the country parishes of Torteval, St Peter’s and St Saviour’s.

The Little Chapel can be seen en route to St Andrew’s Church, before a short climb takes the competitors to Castel Church.

Vale Church marks the 15-mile point, from where the route passes St Sampson’s Church and then heads back into St Peter Port along the sea front.

There are water and feed stations at 6.25, 10.25, 13.5, 15 and 16.75 miles.

White arrows mark the route and all mile marks are painted on the road.

Medals and SWC certificates will be presented to all finishers. Trophies to be won are in some cases only for locals, but at veteran level, the awards are open, with special presentations going to a visitor winning the men’s or women’s section.

Awards are made to the first three to finish. For teams of three walkers, the Fletcher Sports Perpetual Overseas Trophy is on offer.

The race, sponsored by Fletcher Sports, Bucktrout’s/ Walker’s Crisps and P&B Druckes Horticulturists, starts at 9am for women and 9.30am for men.

There is a time limit of 5hr for men, 5hr 30min. for women. Entry costs £3.
