Dunne steals show with three record runs
Tuesday 31st August 2004, 12:00AM BST.
FOUR records fell when the Guernsey Motorcycle and Car Club held the final Le Val des Terres hill climb of the season yesterday. Conditions were far from perfect, but were good enough for some decent times to be posted.
Andy Bougourd was the first to set a new record as he smashed his own mark which he set just last month in the Sports Libra up to 1600cc class.
In his Condor Mallock Suzuki, Bougourd sliced nearly half a second off his previous best and also went under 32sec. in clocking 31.97.
Will Law was another record breaker as he took his Mitsubishi Lancer Evo5 up the hill in 37.64sec. on his second official run of the day.
That knocked just 0.03sec. off the previous standard in the Production Saloons over 1600cc set by Steve Gaudion.
But perhaps the most outstanding performer of the event was John Dunne.
He was already the record holder in the Modified Saloons class with his time of 35.10sec set last summer, but not only did he beat that mark once yesterday, he went under it three times with each of his official runs being sub-35sec. and within 0.03sec. of each other.
His quickest time in his JDR Ford Escort was 34.84sec. and it meant that he had achieved his goal for the day.
‘The road has not been brilliant today, I have driven on it when it has been a lot better, but I cannot complain,’ said Dunne afterwards.
‘I have been a little bit quicker with the other club, I did a 34.69, but that was on a really good day when it was hot and the road was superb. Today, to do it in mediocre conditions, is really pleasing.
‘You have got to set yourself goals and what I wanted to do today was knock the record in this class into 34sec. I came here determined to do that and I am very pleased to have achieved it.
‘This is a new engine I built at the end of last year and the more it runs, the better it gets,’ he added.
Dunne believes that if he had been able to have put together the first half of his record breaking run with the second half of his final run when he clocked 34.87, it would have been even quicker.
‘It will be interesting to see my split times because I know on the last run I was quite a bit slower at the split than I had been before, but I was faster on the top half because I got the same time. I had to back off at the start because the road was so cold,’ he said.
Anthony Poynder was the final record breaker of the afternoon in the motorcycles 701cc and over class riding his AKA Designs Yahama.
The standard fell by the smallest margin of the day, just 0.02sec., but Poynder’s time of 37.64sec. was exceptional as he produced it very late on when the hill was cold.
However, fastest time of the day was achieved by karter Neil Ridley, who clocked 31.36sec. in his Epm Anderson 250.
