Gavey rides into Vazon sprint history
Wednesday 8th September 2004, 12:00AM BST.
KENT GAVEY has become the quickest man on two wheels along Vazon. In perfect conditions at the Guernsey Kart and Motor Club’s last sprint of the season, he beat Darren Warwick’s outright motor cycle record of 9.78sec. which was set two years ago.
Gavey admitted that he was surprised and delighted with his time of 9.75sec. on his Bodyline Suzuki GSXR over the quarter-mile.
‘I have been trying for three years. They were ideal conditions on the day, a slight tail-wind and warm, but I did not expect to go quite that fast. I was just hoping to go under 10,’ he said.
Signs were promising right from the practice run when Gavey stopped the clock at 10sec. dead.
On his first official run, he achieved his goal of dropping under that barrier with 9.85sec. and he cut a further 0.05 off that on his second attempt, a feat which he repeated on his third, record-breaking run.
‘It was quite surprising to go that fast on the practice and the times slowly came down as I got a bit more practise during the day,’ said Gavey.
‘It was ideal for Nitrous [essentially a go-faster gas] and that is basically the only modification I have made to the bike.
‘I could probably not go any quicker. To get those ideal conditions is very rare and you have to get everything all sorted with the bike at the same time. I tried one run after that [record] and it wasn’t as quick, so I called it a day,’ he added.
Gavey has had his 998cc machine for three years and the former Suzuki mechanic has made all the necessary alterations to it himself.
He was thrilled that all those hours have now paid off.
‘What is quite satisfying is that I have done all the work on the bike myself and it is my own bike,’ he said.
‘Hopefully there will be no one else around who will be able to break it for some time and it will stand for a while.’
On a terrific day for records, nine others fell along the west coast.
Mark Burbridge slashed his own junior motor cycle record by a remarkable 0.92sec. with a final run of 17.70 on his Torque Tech MK.
He also broke the motor cycles up to 125cc mark by clocking 15.35 on his Aprilia.
Staying on two wheels, in the 501cc to 600cc category three men went under 11sec: John Rowlinson was the quickest with 10.88 and Richard Vaudin set a new V Twin best of 10.86.
In the motor scooters’ class, Neil Robert went under his previous record on every run, with his best time being 16.53.
In the car classes, Mark Scott knocked half-a-second off the GT & modified sports cars’ record, Peter Jory set a new mark in the sand racing non transaxle and Albert Le Prevost broke the production saloons 1401cc to 1800cc standard.
Glyn Ridley was the other record breaker in the single-cylinder 250 kart category.
