Online gaming has got Nick trapped in its web

Thursday 9th September 2004, 12:00AM BST.

WEB designer Nick Crispini has wriggled his way into running his own online company that specialises in games. The designer, originally from St Peter Port, invented a racing game in which worms raced against each other in the 100m slither. The website has had more than half-a-million hits.

‘Just a few years ago I was quite computer-illiterate. Now I have a job as a web developer. It’s fantastic,’ he said.

The game will be back online when the team has finished linking up gamers across the world.

Mr Crispini set up the web- development company, GC Cubed Ltd, with two university colleagues.

He never believed that he would end up as a web developer.

‘It’s quite ironic because I used to be an artist and I thought I would go into design, but it’s quite the opposite; I have gone more into the development side.

‘I was interested in digital art and design but I didn’t know its full potential. I was very lucky. It was the best decision of my life.

‘I loved it from day one.’

Mr Crispini graduated with a first class BA honours degree in multimedia arts from Middlesex University. It was a three-year course that he completed in two.

He also received a first for his thesis that specialised in what makes online games successful.

It was in the thesis that Mr Crispini realised his potential and said he had become something of an expert in his field.

The direction of the London-based company, although new, has already taken many turns.

It used to specialise in web applications for secondary schools. Its first client was Kesteven and Sleaford School for Girls which still uses the company to maintain its site.
