Burton wins twice over
Tuesday 14th September 2004, 12:00AM BST.
NICK BURTON won two trophies at the Jersey Rifle Association’s 2004 Open Champ-ionship at Crabbe. Not only did he claim the G. H. Pool with a score of 50.09 at 600 yards, but the Elizabeth College student also won the Townsend, which is an aggregate of five competitions.
For the Townsend, he scored 301.34 out of the possible 305.61 and he also placed eighth in the Grand Aggregate.
The Jersey event is shot over four days and this year had a record entry of 78, including many top-class shooters from England.
Both Burton and fellow Elizabethan Scott Benest represented the UK cadets team for the trip to Jersey where the weather conditions were not exactly kind to the shooters, with force four-to-five winds to start with, followed by a six/seven and driving rain for the long-range competitions.
Fortunately, the weather was to improve on the Saturday, with light winds providing respite.
Benest also shot consistently, achieving ninth with 49.07 in the G. H. Pool and ninth in the Cotillard Trophy, 68.06.
Fellow Sarnians Sylvia Sirett finished second in the Sirett Bowl shot at 900 yards with a score of 75.08 out of a possible 75.15 and Cherry Le Poidevin, with a score of 70.05 out of a possible 75.15, placed joint third in the Cotillard shot at 1,000 yards.
Paul Le Poidevin achieved eighth in both the Bisset Challenge Vase and the Seymour.
Back in Guernsey, Le Poidevin won the O. E. Randall competition shoot despite Bob Cushing achieving a possible at 300 yards. The south-west blustery conditions at Fort Le Marchant did not make it easy for competitors, with the wind buffeting the guns.
This competition is handicapped, which enables the ‘B’ class shooters to received an extra two points and two v bulls at each range and was shot at 300 and 600 yards with two sighters and 10 to count.
The maximum score to achieve is 100 points and 20 v bulls.
