X-Celerator and Adagio home first
Thursday 30th September 2004, 12:00AM BST.
X-Celerator and Adagio took away the trophies from the third annual CG Arrow Triangle Race. A wide range of boats including cruisers and racing yachts took part in the event, which also attracted a mixed age-range of competitors, the youngest of whom was just three months old.
Sailed under the flag of the Royal Channel Islands’ Yacht Club, the fleet of eight yachts and various support vessels set off for the first leg to Carteret in a pleasant force 2-3.
X-Celerator led the fleet, hoisting spinnakers at Anfre and then heading south around the Lower Heads buoy and onto the south of L’Etac, just off Sark.
Most boats flew their kites until just north-west of the Ecrehous reef off Jersey. The yachts gybed and then sailed a broad reach towards the finish buoy just off the French coast at Carteret. When the yachts were heading for the finish mark some navigators found that it appeared to be about half a mile north of its expected position.
The first boat to make landfall was X-Celerator although the winner of the leg on handicap in the racing class was Finesse. Adagio took first position of the cruisers.
After a night sampling the Normandy hospitality, an early start the next morning saw the fleet racing northwards up the coast to Dielette.
The breeze had picked up by this time and was blowing a force 4-5.
All boats raced the 12 miles and made it into the marina in less than two hours.
Once again, X-Celerator led the fleet with Blue Jade less than 30 seconds behind but Tantrum, a cruiser, was quickest on corrected time. X-Celerator won the racing yacht class.
Overnight, the wind increased to a blustery force six and as the weather conditions were not suitable for the committee boat to anchor to start the race safely, the decision was taken to cancel the final leg. That left X-Celerator and Adagio as their respective class winners.
