Konken’s kart choice sees him Wright again

Wednesday 31st May 2006, 12:00AM BST.

DARREN KONKEN and his new Wright kart seems the combination to beat in the senior class of this year’s still-embryonic Guernsey Kart and Motor Club championship series. Konken collected two wins and a third place in the heats at the latest championship meeting at the Track, but the 17-year-old was not the only driver providing the entertainment.

Heat two required a restart when on lap six Colin Laine had a serious off coming out of Devils and the race was red flagged.

Andy Ward, who also had a bad day at the office, came off the track while leading the opening heat and then found himself penalised a place in the second for leaving the track more than twice.

Matt Corson seemed to find form again in his new Tony Racer, coming second in all three heats, which gave him second place on the finals grid behind Konken and in front of Ayrton Hockaday, who had won heat three and was another driver rediscovering lost form.

The final saw Konken and Corson get off to a good start and Ward overtake Hockaday on the second lap and that is how it stayed until the chequered flag.

Konken finished 1.8sec. ahead of Corson and 4.32 ahead of Ward. Hockaday was fourth, a further five seconds adrift.

Simon Davey Services sponsored this round of the summer championships and it was the 125-gearbox class in which he races that provided the most entertainment of the day.

Daniel James was able to race for the first time, having celebrated his 16th birthday the day before, and he did not disappoint himself, with a drive-of-the-day performance in his Tony racer.

James placed second twice and grabbed a third in the heats and all along gave Matt Ford in his Maranello a real run for his money, with both recording equal fastest-lap times for this class.

Alex Rosamond’s team frantically worked around the clock to get his brand new Wright kart ready after it arrived only the day before the race.

They achieved their goal and although did not threaten the front runners, Rosamond showed that there is plenty more to come from him in the new kart.

In the Cadet class it seemed to be all about lowering the lap record, with Adam Law and Daniel Ridley both improving on the previous record set by Dexter Le Sauvage.

Ultimately, it was Law who just pipped Ridley to gain the record, lowering it from 22.26 to 22.05 with Ridley at 22.06.

Ridley came out on top in the heats with two wins and a second place against Law’s first, second and third places. However it was Law who won the final, with Ridley second, Le Sauvage third, Kasey Watson fourth and Kameron Davey fifth.

For a change Chris Law didn’t have it all his own way in the junior class, with Alice Le Tissier winning heat three and William Konken scoring two seconds and a third.

But in the final it was business as usual, with Law leading all the way from start to finish and finishing five seconds ahead of Charles Falla and William Konken.

Le Tissier, Sheldon Davey and Joel Wroe Johnson from Jersey made up the final placings.
