Power boost for YE

YOUNG Enterprise has received a welcome boost. Guernsey Electricity, which already sponsors the educational charity, has given an additional £2,000 towards the rising costs of the YE end-of-year exam.

More than 130 sixth-formers took part in the Young Enterprise this year. The students are split into groups and develop their own companies under the guidance of a business adviser.

‘The students involved are part of the island’s commercial future and we recognise the importance of encouraging their learning and providing an insight into enterprise,’ said GE engineering director Steve Morris.

‘We are delighted to be in a position to provide additional funding for the exam.’

The certificate in Young Enterprise is a recognised as qualification, with a similar weighting to a GCSE. Exam administrator Marian Root said that although it was not compulsory, many students chose to sit it and achieved excellent pass rates.

‘The qualification is a good one to have,’ she said. ‘It not only looks impressive on a CV but it also focuses on elements that are essential to business practices, that of team work and problem solving.’

n Young Enterprise is a national education charity founded in the UK in 1963 and operated in Guernsey since 1982 to forge links between schools and industry. Its mission is to inspire and equip young people to learn and succeed through enterprise.
