Police probe auction of blank logbooks on eBay
Thursday 1st June 2006, 12:00AM BST.
POLICE are investigating the sale of blank vehicle logbooks on eBay. Several readers informed the Guernsey Press that a locally-based private seller registered with the online auction site since October 2004 was offering collectors Guernsey car registration documents.
The site said: ‘Hello Bidders. You are viewing a States of Guernsey Channel Islands Car Registration Log.’
They were informed on the site that the book was a virgin one, with no blemishes, ink or official stamps on it, and that this made it rare.
The Guernsey Press emailed the vendor after sources claimed that several of these log books had been sold on eBay.
‘There are no more left,’ said the seller who did not wish to be named.
‘It’s probably illegal to accept them.
‘At the time I was totally ignorant of the situation. I certainly won’t be selling any more,’ he added.
He insisted it had been ‘a genuine mistake’.
A police spokesman confirmed that they were making inquiries on matters relating to the sale of blank logbooks.
The Environment Department declined to comment as the matter was in the hands of police.
