Smith’s Legdraggers are not ones to lag behind
Thursday 1st June 2006, 12:00AM BST.
JASON SMITH’S Legdraggers did not lose a match in winning a successful three-day bank holiday mixed slowpitch tournament at Beau Sejour. Three teams from the Solent area made it over and it was one of them, Mavericks, who pushed Legdraggers in the final before succumbing 11-7.
Skipper Smith admitted that his team did not have it easy against the English side. ‘They got off to a flying start and quickly had two runs in,’ he said.
But the Guernsey team, who had won six and tied one of their seven round-robin games, wasted little time in levelling and Smith hit two home runs as they edged ahead and held on.
Smith said it was a good team performance all weekend and one of the highlights was Gary Machon’s superb catching in the final.
‘All the way through the weekend and no matter how much we swapped people about, everyone came in and played well.’
Smith and GSA president Paul Vaudin agreed that the eight-team event had been a great success.
‘It was very well run and it was quite good to have English umpires over,’ said the winning captain.
‘The weather made it,’ said Vaudin.
Sharks and Knicks were the two other UK sides but both struggled, while Condor were the only team to threaten Legdraggers’ dominance, holding the eventual winners to a 12-12 draw.
‘They gave us a good run for our money,’ said Smith whose victorious team comprised Jo Bellis, Bobby Odoli, Justine Smith, Nikki Jones, Liz Kerr, Debbie Robinson, Gary Machon, Ben Youlton, Junior Berdoda, Tony Gillespie, Tony Fulgoni, Glyn Masterton, Kieran Mahon, Paul Seammen and John Rihoy.
