Set fair for a floral success

Thursday 8th June 2006, 12:00AM BST.

THIS year’s Floral Guernsey festival is set to be a summer scorcher. John Burley, chairman of the Floral Guernsey Council, said that he was very excited with plenty of good weather on the way and a new venue for the event.

‘The weather has turned in our favour. It looks set to be a fine few days and hopefully people will have a wonderful time. The event has the support of organisers, islanders and the weather and I am sure it will be very successful,’ he said.

In celebration of its 10th anniversary, Floral Guernsey has adopted a Victorian theme and will be opened by a woman from that era, 108-year-old Victoria Langlois.

‘I’m definitely looking forward to seeing Victoria Langlois open the event on Friday and we are delighted that she is coming to open this year’s festival. It’s a new venue. Candie Gardens makes a change from Saumarez Park and it lends itself to an occasion such as this,’ said Mr Burley.

The three-day event is returning to its traditional roots and will feature floral displays, show gardens and plant sales.

Mr Burley said that people could enjoy a combination of all things floral.

‘Hopefully anyone who attends will pick up some tips. The whole week is about encouraging people to get involved in horticultural matters and reinvigorate those who already have an interest,’ he said.
