Canadians and English watch out

Saturday 1st July 2006, 12:00AM BST.

GUERNSEY succumbed to an exceptional performance by the Jersey VIII in the annual full-bore inter-insular at Fort Le Marchant. In previous years, usually a total of 1,180.149 would be enough to win the match. But not this time, as Jersey posted a record score for a Caesarean team in any match: 1,190 with 150 ‘v’ bulls out of a possible 1,200 with 2450 ‘v’ bulls.

The visitors’ score will send a clear message to England and Canada that Jersey will be serious contenders for the 2006 Kolopore match at Bisley.

The teams were close after 300 yards, with Jersey 397 ex 400 to Guernsey’s 395. At 500 yards Jersey edged a further point ahead with 395 to Guernsey’s 394 and then at 600 yards, a range where Guernsey traditionally do well, the Jersey team excelled themselves with a 398 to Guernsey’s 391.

Surely this must count as the best ever match between the islands and the scores were significantly higher than in previous years. Top score of the day for Jersey was reached by Richard Benest with 150.21, ably supported by Cliff Mallett on 150.16, while Guernsey’s only possible came from Phil Ogier on 150.18.

Donaldson was second best for Guernsey with a well-earned 149.22. The most interesting shoot, however, came from Guernsey captain Peter Jory, who dropped an uncharacteristic three points at 300 yards, but made up for it with a magnificent maximum 50.10 at 500 yards and a superb 50.09 at 600 yards for a total of 147.25.

His ‘v’ bull count was the highest, beating the best Jerseyman by four.
