Avery brothers sign for Rovers
Monday 3rd July 2006, 12:00AM BST.
AT THE end of June’s transfer window, there are two new Priaulx coaches and one of them will be smiling whereas the other will be scratching his head. Mick Le Prevost took over from Trim Morgan at North at the end of the season and during the last month seven of his players have left for Sylvans.
The St Peter’s club is also under new management for the 2006-7 season, Martyn de Garis having taken over the reins in May.
The exodus from Northfield started with de Garis’ younger brother, goalkeeper Paul, returning to the red-and-whites.
Island players Michael Wilson and Tom Duff soon followed along with top juniors Sam Matthews and Anthony O’Regan. Ewen Beacom switched as well.
The rout was completed when Duff’s twin brother, Ben, also signed on the last day of the window.
Having just returned from holiday, Le Prevost was unaware of the latest Duff move.
‘I haven’t heard that one,’ he said.
‘We’ve lost a few players but we’ve got some good players here at North. You can’t keep everyone happy, that’s up to them at the end of the day.
‘I can’t guarantee everyone a place in the team. It’s all about improving yourself to get in the team. I like players who work for their place.’
Against the flow out of Northfield, Rovers striker Simon Tostevin joined the chocolate-and-blues. A good run could see him feature in Steve Ogier’s island team plans.
Sylvans goalkeeper Richard Davey, obviously sensing that his chances would be limited with the arrival of de Garis, went to North too.
Undoubtedly the big move of the month also involved Sylvans as their star striker, Neil Clegg, signed for champions Bels.
Last year’s Sylvans player-coach Joel Avery has been released from the club along with his brother, Jarrod, and forward Dave Toussaint. All three have joined Rovers.
