Record not challenged
Wednesday 5th July 2006, 12:00AM BST.
ANDY BROWN and Richard Smith won the top prizes in the Quayside Marine and Leisure Open Bass Challenge. The event had been organised and run by the Bailiwick Bass Club and president Nigel Mahy compered the presentation evening at L’Eree Hotel and welcomed everyone.
He expressed the club’s appreciation to all the sponsors who supported the event.
He also thanked the committee who had worked hard to ensure its smooth running.
Although no double-figure bass were caught, it was considered that the challenge had been satisfactory, with catches on a par with the previous year.
The only prizes not won were the £1,000 award for breaking the Bailiwick bass record and the two junior awards.
It was pleasing to see that, unlike similar previous angling presentations, all the winners were present to receive their awards.
An inter-club competition between the BBC and GBass is run in conjunction with the two bass festivals.
At the halfway point, BBC have six shore-caught fish for 41-8-6 while GBass have four for 25-13-5.
Battle will be resumed at the GBass Open Festival, which is due to be held from 10 to 13 August.
All the awards were given out by Trevor Page, from Quayside Marine.
THE Guernsey Sea Anglers’ Club had a busy week with both senior and junior boat championship competitions.
John Hatton won the seniors’ three-hour evening match with a catch of 18 pollack for 22-12-0 and 145 points.
The event attracted 28 members and all but one brought fish to the scales. The total catch consisted of 174 pollack, four mackerel, one garfish, one scad and one ballan wrasse.
The average size of the fish was small, with the heaviest pollack being just 3-4-0.
It was caught by Peter Perrio and gave him the heaviest fish kitty on one boat.
Those on the other two boats was won by Len Hall (2-15-0 pollack) and Peter Frise (2-12-0 pollack).
The marks fished by the three charter boats during the match were the Petites Canupes and a number near Tauteray.
As often happens in boat events, one fared better than the others to the point where the anglers on board filled the top eight places on the night.
The result meant that Hatton went to the top of the boat championship list with 299.25 points just 13.75 ahead of previous leader Stuart Tostevin.
As this was the first leg in the two-match Clark series, Hatton will take a 34.75 point lead into the second and last leg, a six-hour shore event.
The juniors were taken to the Fourquies in the Big Russel. Winner was Paul Gallienne with 15 pollack for 21-12-0 and 132 points.
The evening event attracted 17 youngsters and all found fish. The total catch was 101 pollack, two black bream, three mackerel and a bass.
The heaviest bag award went to Gallienne for his 21-12-0, while the other prizes went to Ben Le Prevost for his 3-8-0 bass and Adam Blanchard for his 3-4-0 pollack.
As a result of his success on the night, Gallienne has gone to the top of the junior championship with 223 points, a lead of 28 over second-placed Jake Meerveld.
COLIN DRUCE has entered a 24-0-0 blonde ray in the June fish-of- the-month competition.
He ledgered a sandeel on the Banc de la Schole and hooked a 24-0-0 specimen, which will be judged against the 36-2-7 Bailiwick boat record.
A mark to the east of Sark produced a 19-8-0 turbot for Neil Corbet. It had been tempted by a whole live mackerel bait presented on ledger tackle.
It was an unusual turbot for at least 80% of the upper side of the fish was white instead of the usual mottled brown.
It’s been entered in the June FoM where it will be assessed against the 30-4-0 boat record.
Four bass caught during the Quayside Marine and Leisure Open Bass Challenge have become entries in the Phoenix Fish competition.
They are the 9-15-14 winning fish caught by Richard Smith at Banc de la Schole and three caught on marks around Alderney, 9-15-10 by Simon Rowe, 9-14-12 by Paul Berry and 9-12-6 by Roger Berry.
Junior angler Adam Goddard has made the first entry in the July competition.
A mark east of Sark produced a 2-14-14 black bream for the youngster, who had ledgered a cuttlefish bait.
It is a good entry in an attempt to win the Aval du Creux Hotel monthly junior award, in which it will be judged against the 6-10-8 Bailiwick boat record.
SARNIA Specimen Club members entered 11 superb ones in the competition during June, all boat-caught fish.
Two were big John Dorys, Barry Jacobs boating one of 10-6-13 and Phil Dodd one of 8-12-1.
Unsurprisingly four were turbot. Jason Le Noury had the heaviest, a 22-8-0 fish, as well as a 16-8-0 specimen, while Jez Vaudin also had two, fish of 18-0-4 and 14-14-1.
Barry Jacobs completed the flatfish catches with a 7-2-4 brill.
Jez Vaudin had two huge garfish, 1-14-1 and 1-10-12, while junior angler Brendan La Touche caught a 13-10-0 pollack.
Stuart Thompson completed the month’s catch list with a 21-6-4 cod.
