Young track and field stars show up World Cup ‘cheats’

Wednesday 5th July 2006, 12:00AM BST.

GUERNSEY’S top junior school athletes have been hard at work preparing for the annual inter-insular on Saturday. They have received specialist training from the island’s top coaches, including Lee Merrien and Dale Garland.

This year’s team produced some excellent performances in the island school sports last month and manager Alun Williams is confident that they will do well against Jersey.

‘We are very impressed with this year’s squad. It has been reassuring to see so many of our club members making it through, but also it has been exciting to discover so much new talent,’ he said.

‘The team have behaved in an exemplary manner. They have been really eager to learn and very willing to support each other. That has contrasted very strongly to the cheating, unsportsmanlike behaviour of some of their World Cup heroes.’
