Two hook 10 apiece as catches generally disappoint
Wednesday 19th July 2006, 12:00AM BST.
NICK MERRIEN has won the trophy for the Guernsey Sea Anglers’ Club’s fourth senior boat championship competition of the season. His winning catch for the three-hour evening event was 10 pollack and one mackerel for 14-13-0 and 95.25 points.
He was closely challenged by Jason Sangan who also landed 10 pollack and a mackerel, but for a slightly lower weight of 14-2-0, to gain 92.5 points.
They were the only anglers to top 10 fish as catches were extremely disappointing. All 24 competitors weighed in, with the total catch consisting of 107 pollack, one brill, one sandeel, two red gurnard, one bass and two ballan wrasse.
Marks fished were the Fourquies in the Big Russel, Brehon Tower and the wreck outside St Peter Port Harbour.
The individual boat competitions for the heaviest fish went to Gary Le Page on Discovery with a 4-15-0 pollack, Peter Frise on Out the Blue II with a 4-14-0 ballan wrasse, while on Market K two anglers tied for the kitty, Nick Merrien and Ron Harris both catching a 2-12-0 pollack.
However, the most notable fish of the night was the 4-11-4 brill boated by Martin Crittell at the Fourquies.
The result meant that John Hatton and Stuart Tostevin retained their positions at the top of the boat and overall championship list, with Hatton now on 357.25 points to Tostevin’s 312.75.
Gary Le Page leapfrogged over Len Hall to gain third spot with 305.25 points.
With just one boat match remaining, a close and exciting finish is assured.
The club juniors fished the third leg in their four-match Roger Cup series. The evening event attracted 16 youngsters who enjoyed better catches than the seniors in their competition.
Thomas Fisher won the match with 13 pollack for 18-14-0 and 114.5 points.
All 16 found fish, the total catch consisting of 95 pollack and three mackerel.
Marks included the Lower Heads, Gabriel, Grunes off Jerbourg and the Great Bank.
The prize for the heaviest bag went to Fisher, while the heaviest fish award on the Margaret K went to Jason Crittell for a 4-4-0 pollack and to Kyle Hooper on Out the Blue II for a 4-12-0 pollack.
With just one competition remaining in the series, Paul Gallienne is leading with 311 points, but Matthew Ceresa is only 13.75 behind in second place.
SHANE HUXSTER had a busy time on the West Coast Sea Angling Club’s all-night-in-Herm match for he caught no fewer than 16 bass.
Unfortunately, 10 were under the club’s 50cm size limit, so he was left with only six to weigh in at the end of the competition.
They were, however, enough to give him victory, for they weighed a total of 25-2-0 and gave him 280.25 points.
He was closely challenged by Richard Torode who had five bass for 32-10-0 and 272.5 points. His biggest weighed 10-0-0 and gave him half the competition kitty.
The other half went to John Rothwell who had the heaviest grey mullet, a 3-10 fish. He landed four for a total weight of 12-2-0 and 128.5 points, enough to place him in third spot on the night.
Steve Huxster had the same problem as his son Shane. He caught 12 bass but only one exceeded the size limit: a 5-5-0 fish.
The event attracted nine members, who had a total catch consisting of 15 bass, four grey mullet, one lesser-spotted dogfish and one three-bearded rockling.
The result meant that Shane Huxster consolidated his lead at the top of the overall championship list, which is now 170.75 points over second-placed Torode.
