Bates is victorious
Friday 21st July 2006, 12:00AM BST.
TERRY BATES was victorious in the Sarnia Walking Club’s Guernsey Championship 5km road race at Delancey Park. He was content to let Rob Elliott stay in the lead for the first two of the eight laps but then he moved ahead to gain a four-second advantage by the halfway mark.
Elliott’s form of his previous 5km walk deserted him as Bates increased his lead to 24 seconds at the end.
Fast-finishing Stuart Le Noury was only seconds outside his best, which had been set on an easier course.
Rose Druckes was the first woman home, finishing ahead of Carol Bates, who walked well only to come home only 14 seconds down on her best.
The next walk is on Sunday 30 July for the Piette Trophy in conjunction with the Rocquaine Regatta.
It is a handicap walk over 3.8 miles starting and finishing at Rocquaine Bay beginning at 9.30am.
