Young Rob fires Kolapore team

Saturday 22nd July 2006, 12:00AM BST.

COLLEGE cadet Rob Waters provided the star turn as Guernsey’s full-bore rifle team produced a stunning performance at Bisley. The Sarnians pipped the highly-fancied Jersey squad by one point to take third place behind Great Britain and Canada in the day’s major international match – the Kolapore.

It was a high scoring affair in similar conditions to the first 10 days of the meeting, dry, hot, but with a tricky wind.

The Guernsey VIII began the match with a consistent shoot over 300 yards and at the longer range of 500 the team really came into their own, dropping only a single point per shooter.

On moving back to 600 they consolidated their position with consistently high scores from each member and it was at this longest range that Guernsey stole ahead of Jersey who struggled to maintain their earlier high scores.

The Sarnians’ success against Jersey is all the more creditable as the Caesarean team is regarded as one of the sister island’s strongest for many years.

Waters was firing in his first Kolapore and top scored with a remarkable 149 out of 150, a standard normally achieved only by the most experienced international shots.

Mike Martel, his wind coach for the match, was delighted. ‘His performance in this match augurs well for the future of Guernsey shooting and his own individual success.’
