Duquemin brings the posties home first in borrowed trainers

Thursday 27th July 2006, 12:00AM BST.

GUERNSEY POST delivered right on time in the Collins Stewart Town Relay. The team of Dave Gardner, Tristan Robilliard, Sam Dowding and Dominic Duquemin stormed to victory in the ever-popular event yesterday evening – after ensuring final runner Duquemin had trainers which fitted him.

‘Dave, Sam and I have been doing it for three or four years but the fourth member of the team seems to be different each time,’ said Robilliard.

‘We were struggling to get a fourth runner and we only found out about an hour beforehand that Dominic was able to do it. We then had to find him some shoes.’

Even that episode had its own bit of drama.

‘They fitted all right in the end. The first pair were size 14 and were far too big, but then I got a 10 and they were fine,’ Duquemin said.

They certainly did the job as he brought his team home in 21min. 14sec. with Dowding posting the quickest individual time of the evening of 5-00.

‘Coming up the High Street and Smith Street was a killer,’ he said.

Fairbairn Trust came home 40sec. later with BWCI Pigs taking third place.

Fortis Ladies took the women’s honours with Louise Perrio bringing the team, which also included Caroline Wickham, Tina Coutanche and Celia Harborow, home in an overall time of 26-41.

The island star had earlier recorded the fastest female time of 5-31 when she ran the first leg for the company’s mixed team in a race won by Body Zone, who clocked 25-26.
