Couple accused of golf range joyride

Monday 7th August 2006, 12:00AM BST.

TOP golfer Andy Eggo has been reported to police for taking a joyride on the driving range at L’Ancresse.

Fellow players are demanding that disciplinary measures are taken against Mr Eggo and his partner, Jackie Parnwell, following the incident.

It is understood that both were inside a Mini which was driven around the range, knocking out markers and nets, before smashing into a marquee, uprooting tent pegs and damaging it and the irrigation system.

The Royal Guernsey Golf Club has said nothing about the incident, but it is understood that senior island player and L’Ancresse Golf Club member Mr Eggo has given up the game indefinitely.

Mrs Parnwell has resigned from her position as RGGC Ladies’ Section honorary secretary.

Mr Eggo did not participate in the biggest tournament of the year – the L’Ancresse Open – at the weekend.

Golfers said that the incident occurred during a RGGC barbecue and social function held on the practice field behind the two clubs on Saturday 22 July.

Police confirmed that they attended an incident in the area but said that the matter was being dealt with internally by the clubs.

RGGC club manager Roy Bushby admitted last Monday that there had been an incident on private land that had been reported to police.

‘No further action is being taken,’ he said.

Days later, a meeting about the incident was held by the RGGC’s officials. It has been the talk of members for a fortnight.

But they were last week still awaiting the outcome of that meeting and an official announcement on any action to be taken against the pair.

‘Everybody is shocked that it has happened and a lot of people are surprised that nothing official has been said about it,’ said one golfer, who, like the rest of the members, was keen not to be named.

‘Everybody expected something to be done straight after the incident but everything is being kept very quiet. Nothing at all is coming out of the club officially.

‘We are all waiting to hear what is happening and nobody seems to know, but eventually they will have to say what they have done.

‘It’s just not an acceptable thing to happen on a golf course. Everybody is so keen for everything to be done properly both on and off the field.’

Mr Eggo, an island regular over the last decade and five times runner-up in the island championships, including this year, was given the opportunity to respond to the allegations, but did not do so.

It has not been possible to contact Mrs Parnwell.
