Once more unto the beach
Saturday 2nd September 2006, 12:00AM BST.
GRANDES ROCQUES was awash with bumps, sets and spikes for the annual beach volleyball extravaganza. On day one, five teams competed.
Defending champions Shaft, comprising organisers Hayley Bougourd and Louise Langlois along with Troy Bodie, Darren Lynch and Lize-Marie Theron, made a return to the court.
However, this year a new team took the title – Camp Spikers comprising Marty Baker, Keiran O’Neill, Muratti football stars Paul and John Nobes and Jan Renouf.
‘We’re friends with Marty and the volleyball boys and we joked with them that we’re going to get involved,’ said Paul Nobes.
‘It was a fun day more than a serious day and we turned up in orange shirts and headbands to have a laugh. We were surprised to win it.’
In a close final they triumphed over Turnip Smugglers – Liam Smyth, Ed Prow and David Chapman.
Day two saw more teams playing and the entrants split into two divisions. In the top one, four teams battled it out.
The games were great to watch with exciting rallies and shots, but in the end two teams of established league players met in the final.
Shaft, this time with a changed line-up of Hayley Bougourd, Jon Marley, Troy Bodie and Marty Baker faced Turnip Smugglers.
Having lost out in the final the day before, Turnip Smugglers were determined not to taste defeat again and with the addition of Ben Hill to their line up, they won this time.
The second division event consisted of five teams from the Social Leagues and also ones that had never competed or even played volleyball before.
The final was between Touch Plus Two, made up of Aaron Le Masurier, Alec Bailey, Laura Cravo and Darren Holden and Team Extravert – Ian Hubert, Ross Yeates, Chris Gillman, Jonny Le Noury and Phil Sweet.
After a good battle, the latter secured the title.
‘I’d like to thank everybody who came to support, watch and play this weekend,’ said organiser Bougourd.
‘It was so successful that we are thinking of holding a further tournament this month.’
