Guernsey to feature in This Morning travel slot

Wednesday 6th September 2006, 12:00AM BST.

GUERNSEY will feature in a holiday programme on top daytime television show This Morning in the next few weeks. Badgering the producers paid off for VisitGuernsey, but the film crew then picked a weekend of poor weather. But that did not put them off.

Commerce and Employment marketing manager Jason Moriarty said that the crew had managed to get some beautiful shots of the island.

‘We worked really hard to accommodate them and we did have an alternative plan to accommodate the weather. But over the course of the two days, they got some excellent material which I am sure will be used during the show,’ he said.

The footage will appear in a new holiday slot, Getaways, on the popular programme. It is expected that more than two million people will watch.

Commerce and Employment member Deputy Mike O’Hara said the short travel film focused on the themes of family and activity and it was fantastic that Guernsey was chosen.

‘We are delighted that ITV’s This Morning selected Guernsey as the perfect family holiday destination for this series. I imagine the competition was fierce,’ he said.

Filming over the two-day period included locations such as St Peter Port, Castle Cornet, Cobo Bay and Herm.

The crew also accompanied rib voyages and enjoyed seafood dining.

Guernsey is believed to be the only British destination to have been filmed.

‘The choice reinforces that Guernsey’s appeal as a non-commercialised, theme park free destination for families remains strong,’ said Deputy O’Hara.

‘The islands have all the right components for a traditional family holiday including quality attractions, a good choice of affordable accommodation and excellent beaches and, very importantly, all just 50 minutes or so flight from the mainland.’

The strand, which is presented by Steve Wilson, a new face on This Morning, covers a range of accommodation options on offer in Guernsey and Herm.

Other destinations featured on the new segment include France’s Loire Valley and Dubrovnik in Croatia.

Mr Moriarty said that the visit had taken a lot of preparation.

‘We pitched Guernsey to them as we are in contact frequently with daytime magazine programmes and as a result the island was chosen as one of the feature destinations for the programme,’ he said.

The crew included three members and the presenter who were aided by VisitGuernsey and the businesses to be featured in the programme.

The film will be followed by a competition, sponsored by tour operator Premier Holidays, with a prize of a week’s family holiday in Guernsey for the winner.
