Honda trainer is boost for dealer

Wednesday 6th September 2006, 12:00AM BST.

Honda technicians are getting first-class training from UK experts. Honda UK power equipment technical trainer John Mesger-Schofield organised the four-day session for staff at Chick’s Motors. This is the first time that the training has been organised outside of the manufacturer’s's training institute.

And if the scheme proves successful, it may act as a model for the rest of the British Isles.

‘We are working on increasing the technicians’ skill level and product familiarisation, all in an effort to improve customer service and help them in what they do – it’s all about customer support,’ said Mr Mesger-Schofield.

The four-day course, which was part lecture and part practical, covered marine equipment, all-terrain vehicles and generators. The trainees were taught new methods relating to fuel injection and electrical systems, diagnostics and a broad understanding of modern component assembly.

‘Each trainee had a training needs analysis,’ said Mr Mesger-Schofield.

‘Once we knew what level each was at, then we would design the training based around their needs.

‘I was very impressed with the standard of trainees taking the course here.’

Everyone successfully completing the course will be a Honda-certified technician at diagnostic level.

Chick’s marine service manager Jerry Pols was impressed with the training.

‘It’s been excellent,’ he said.

‘With more and more technology coming through all of the time, it makes sure we keep up to speed.’

Chick’s Motors managing director Chick Robilliard said he was pleased the Japanese firm had selected the Guernsey firm to experiment with.

‘They could be setting a precedent for the UK – they’re very pleased with how it’s going. Normally we would have to send the trainees to the UK institute.

‘However, it’s a disruption to the business when you’re a small firm and lose someone in the UK for three or four days – it also costs a fortune,’ he said.

Mr Robilliard received a plaque from the Institute, which certified the outlet as the only Honda-approved service centre in Guernsey.

Honda technicians from Jersey also attended parts of the course.
