Competition? Bring it on, says Bucktrout

Monday 11th September 2006, 12:00AM BST.

BUCKTROUT AND CO LTD is unconcerned about competition from new off-licences opening around the island. General manager Alan Gerrard said business at the new Flagship Admiral Park store was on the up and welcomed rivalry with other retailers.

‘Competition is very healthy – I don’t think there’s overcrowding in the marketplace,’ he said.

‘More and more people are now drinking at home and subsequently we have to react to the trend.’

The increasing production of New World wines – particularly from Asia – is not expected to bring a cut in consumer prices.

‘New World prices have been fairly static in recent years,’ he said.

‘India and China are still in their infancy where wine production is concerned and it’s thought that production will mainly be for their domestic market.’

Turnover at the 10,000sq. ft outlet – which opened at the beginning of July – was increasing all the time, he said.

‘The range is now much bigger than the First Tower Lane shop – across all wines and spirits sections.

‘We are also looking forward to adding concepts and products very soon.’

The outlet employs five staff full-time and one part-time, with plans to bring more on board in the future.

‘As the business continues to grow, so will the number of shop staff,’ he said.

‘The key is knowledgeable and friendly staff who can help customers make the right choices.’
