Marquand to the rescue

Wednesday 13th September 2006, 12:00AM BST.

Rangers 4, Bels 4.

WHAT a cracking game of football. In the fog and gloom at St Andrews last night, Bels had a 3-0 half-time advantage only to see Rangers grab the lead with four goals in the second half.

Shane Billien got a hat trick before Brent Marquand smashed home the equaliser in the last minute for the visitors.

‘We were absolutely awful for the first half but we had a totally different second half,’ said Rangers boss Mac Gallienne.

‘We had a lucky first goal but we worked hard in the second half. I’m pleased with the point but we threw away three.’

An absolute rout looked on the cards for the champions when they bagged three goals in 20 minutes. Their first was back post header for striker Marc McGrath, which was followed by a low 20 yards drive into the bottom corner by Joby Bourgaize.

Their third was a peach when Daragh Duffy got on the end of a top through ball from Bourgaize to put it past keeper Chris Parrott.

At the start of the second half, the home side luckily clawed one back when Leighton Chainey’s clearance rebounded off Billien’s head and into the net.

Just on the hour, Rangers got their second when captain Duncan Flint put away a bouncing ball in the box. Now in the ascendancy, the red-and-blacks equalized when Billien got his head onto a wicked corner from Marc Isabelle that Adrian Gidney could do nothing about.

Rangers then led seven minutes from time when Billien got the ball over Gidney and into the goal.

An unlikely win looked on for Gallienne and his team until substitute Marquand cleanly struck the ball in from 20 yards out in the dying moments.

It was the best goal of a night that was eventful to say the least.
