Wednesday 13th September 2006, 12:00AM BST.
TEENAGER Craig Rouget has been charged with murdering 21-year-old James Dean in the High Street on Saturday evening. The 18-year-old accused, whose home address was given as Entre Nous, Braye Road, Vale, appeared in the Magistrate’s Court yesterday.
He was remanded in custody until Monday 9 October.
Mr Rouget, who works as a driver and was born in July 1988, appeared in court at 4.23pm.
The small public gallery was packed for the hearing.
Advocate Fiona Russell, who applied for a remand in custody, confirmed that Mr Rouget had been charged with murder arising out of an incident on Saturday evening, as a result of which James Dean sustained fatal injuries.
Assistant-Magistrate Philip Robey refused a bail application by Mr Rouget’s advocate, Sara Mallett.
Police inquiries are continuing. Several witnesses have been interviewed and more have yet to be interviewed.
Forensic investigations are also continuing.
Mr Rouget, whose ties are all local, entered no plea to the charge.
None of the allegations submitted to the court could be reported as it was suggested they might carry a substantial risk to proceedings.
Police confirmed yesterday that another person who had been detained during the investigation had been released on bail pending inquiries into other matters.
Detective Chief Inspector Peter Dowding said a forensic pathologist had conducted a post-mortem investigation.
‘There has been an excellent response from the public with more than 100 calls to the police incident room,’ he said.
‘There are many witnesses to be seen by officers over the next few days.’
A book of condolence has been placed in the Shine shop in 10, Fountain Street for anyone wishing to pay their respects to James Dean and his family.
The shop opens at 9.30am and closes at 5.30pm.
n Police want anyone who saw a red Renault Clio at North Beach car park at about 10pm on Saturday to contact them.
* Officers thanked all those who had called and were encouraging anyone else with any information to contact the incident room on 719494, police HQ on 725111 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
