Guernsey learn lessons from last year’s defeats

GUERNSEY coach Gill Queripel has named squads containing a mixture of youth and experience for the inter-insulars at Beau Sejour this weekend. Both A and B sides were beaten heavily in their previous encounters with Jersey but Queripel says that her teams will not be dwelling on past results.

‘The average age of the [A] team will probably be something like 20. In fact, the oldest player on the court is going to be 26,’ Queripel said.

‘The B team is going to be even younger as the oldest will be 24.

‘We didn’t do very well last year but you learn valuable lessons from every game that you play. We take each game as it comes and you tend not to think about what happened last year.

‘They are going to come out fighting and so are we, so this year we are looking for a closer encounter.

‘There is always so much passion in these games and they can get quite feisty, but our girls will be concentrating on winning.’

Queripel dismissed suggestions that Jersey were favourites for the main game and insisted that the A side was brimming with confidence after a string of impressive results against English opposition.

‘The indications from both sides is that they are both doing very well in their respective English leagues. But I would say that our region is stronger than the region that they are in. They have not lost yet this season but there is always a first time.

‘Our regional games are going well and there are some new faces going into the first team, new faces going into the second team. They played awesomely well in the last fixture: I just hope they have not peaked too early.

‘We hope we are going to be in for a very good match and give the spectators something exciting to see.’
