Vandals leave a trail of damage

Monday 5th February 2007, 12:00AM GMT.

VANDALS went on a window-smashing spree in the early hours of yesterday. Police had reports of up to 20 incidents whereby windows of cars and houses were smashed in the Vale and St Sampson’s.

The trail of destruction ran from Beaucette Marina along La Route de la Lande, Miellette Lane, Dehus Lane, Bordel Lane, Ville es Pies, Belval Road and the Maresquets through to the Bridge.

Police Sergeant Martyn Bougourd said there was one incident of a rock being thrown through a conservatory at La Longue Rue, just off Camp du Roi, which did not fall into that pattern.

‘It’s possible it’s not connected but with all the others happening, I doubt it. But it has thrown a spanner in the works.’

Dave Prigent was one of the victims in La Route de la Lande. The 50-year-old decorator had the windscreen of his van smashed by a stone.

He believed the crime was carried out by someone aged 18 or over.

‘It can’t have been kids because whoever did this must have been quite strong.

‘There’s nothing we can do about it. The police can come down and have a look at it and take pictures but whoever did this will get away with it unless they had been caught red-handed.’

He estimated the damage would cost £1,000 to fix.

‘This is my van for work so before I start tomorrow I’m going to have to go and sort this out.

‘How would they feel if someone did this to their vehicle? There must have been a group of them to do as much damage as they have.’

Sgt Bougourd said that officers were investigating and wanted to hear from anyone who saw or heard anything suspicious in the affected areas between midnight and 7am. Witnesses should call 725111 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
