IT man’s licence to hack

ERNST & YOUNG now has a certified ethical computer hacker in its ranks. Matthew Parker, from the technology security and risk services team, has passed the EC Council exam.

An ethical hacker is a skilled IT professional who knows how to look for weaknesses and vulnerabilities in computer systems.

Businesses employ them to test the security of their systems using the same knowledge and tools as malicious hackers.

‘It was great to get through the course and I was delighted to pass the exam.

My job is focused on guaranteeing information security for our clients and this qualification attests to that,’ said Mr Parker.

Partner David Moore said he was delighted he had obtained the highly respected qualification. He is believed to be the first person in the Channel Islands to do so.

‘Computer hacking is not only widespread, but is increasingly used by organised criminal gangs to commit fraud.

‘These gangs are becoming highly skilled and are now targeting specific individuals and organisations,’ said Mr Moore.

‘Often they are able to compromise systems, steal sensitive data and erase their tracks without the victim being aware.’

Mr Moore said being on the ball enabled the company to take corrective action before it was too late.

‘Increasing our skills in this area enables us to offer greater assurance to our clients by testing their computer security before they become a victim of an attack.’
