Say you’re sorry

Thursday 8th February 2007, 12:00AM GMT.

MINISTERS at the centre of Fallagate should say sorry. The fallout from the saga has led Social Security minister Mary Lowe to threaten legal action against Health minister Peter Roffey.

Deputy Barry Brehaut yesterday emailed States members in response to an email Deputy Lowe sent out on Tuesday.

‘I would like all those who contributed to the loss of £2.4m. to apologise to the people of Guernsey and not lose themselves in an inflated sense of self and have the nerve to take the moral high ground when they have eroded so much of it,’ said Deputy Brehaut in his email.

‘For Deputy Lowe to behave in this manner simply illustrates that nothing, absolutely nothing, has been learnt from the events of the past few weeks.’

He added that islanders were waiting for a simple, ‘sorry, we got it wrong’.

‘I sense that they will be a little damning of those who seek to clear their name when they are all paying £50 each to clear the Policy Council’s collective debt.’

Deputy Brehaut believed that in the council meeting on 7 August, the cheaper R. G. Falla bid was ‘talked out’.

Commerce and Employment minister Stuart Falla’s role with the family building firm was questioned after he had left the meeting.

‘The minutes reflect that the person was under more scrutiny than the tender. Where was the focus? Where was the discipline?’ said Deputy Brehaut.

Current Chief Minister Laurie Morgan is still refusing to say whether he will stand again.

Already Home minister Mike Torode and deputy chief minister Bernard Flouquet have announced that they will stand for the post.

*This is readers’ last chance to select their fantasy Policy Council.

With ministers all deciding to resign, it is an opportunity for sweeping changes.

Many, including some deputies, have already sent in their choices of who should hold the top posts.

A form was printed in Tuesday’s paper or alternatively responses can be emailed to newsroom@guernsey-press.com.

The Policy Council is made up of a chief minister, deputy chief minister and ministers for Treasury, Environment, Home, Public Services, Health, Education, Culture and Leisure, Social Security, Commerce and Employment and Housing.

The chief minister cannot have another job.

The deputy chief minister is chosen from among the other ministers.
