Scout leader’s 40 years of service rewarded
Friday 9th February 2007, 12:00AM GMT.
SCOUT leader Juliet Carre was named last night as the winner of the Specsavers Lifetime Achievement Award. Mrs Carre, 58, joined the Scouts when she was 14 and last year received the long service award for 40 years of voluntary service.
‘The reality of the evening is really just setting in,’ she said.
‘It’s a very humbling experience being nominated. Even people from as far away as Australia put in a vote.
‘I want to thank everyone who has supported me and those who have put pen to paper in Guernsey.’
Mrs Carre played a big part in the fund-raising efforts for the 2nd Guernsey’s building project, helping to raise the £180,000 needed.
The award is particularly fitting as Scouting is celebrating its 100th birthday this year.
She has also helped her parish, St Sampson’s, by working as clerk for the constables for more than 18 years.
The Scout leader was described as a ‘most reliable and dedicated person’ and ‘a very hard worker in whatever she is involved in’.
Mrs Carre also received a holiday worth £3,000, a £1,000 donation to a charity of her choice and the coveted trophy.
Also shortlisted were Roger Allsop, Henry Goodeve, Rossford de Carteret and Roy Perry.
The 800-strong audience applauded each person while Specsavers co-founder Mary Perkins read out their achievements.
‘All five are winners – they’re unsung heroes,’ she said.
‘It is an almost overwhelming task to reduce all the nominations to just five when they are so deserving.
‘This award became the voice of the Guernsey people and they without a doubt have chosen their winner.’
* Last year’s winner was Guernsey Jumbulance founder Pam Bartlett, who has dedicated much of her life to arranging trips for disabled people, helpers, nurses and doctors.
