Judgement day is here
Wednesday 28th February 2007, 12:00AM GMT.
JUDGEMENT on the Fallagate affair, which saw the Policy Council resign, is expected today. More than six months after the fateful council meetings, the issue as to why the cheaper tender to build the clinical block was pulled comes before the House.
A heated debate is expected, with battle lines drawn over the £2.4m. loss. The outcome will also decide the future of Chief Minister Laurie Morgan.
He had nothing to say yesterday, but will decide whether to stand for the post again after deputies have had their say on the Wales Audit Office report.
Treasury minister Lyndon Trott’s resignation will also be debated after the WAO recommendations. Last week he announced that if the House accepted it, he would not stand for the job again this term.
He, too, had no comment to make yesterday.
On Monday the island will know who its chief minister will be and on Wednesday the new Policy Council members.
Culture and Leisure minister Peter Sirett, who was at the meetings in August, believed the picture was getting more confusing as time passed.
He did not think the debate would resolve the issue.
‘For me, the unknown quantity is what happened at the R. G. Falla meeting. While there’s such a large unknown in the equation, we’re always seeking answers where there aren’t any,’ said Deputy Sirett.
He added that the States should concentrate on the 14 recommendations made in the report, not on personalities.
Nominations for chief minister must be in by 3pm on Saturday. Deputies Jonathan Le Tocq, Bernard Flouquet and Mike Torode all intend to run.
